Endocannabinoid System

Summary:

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a signaling pathway found in both mammal and human species is widely distributed throughout our entire body. It is composed of endocannabinoids (Anandamide and 2-AG), receptors (CB1, CB2, 5-HT1A), and enzymes. The ECS communicates with other systems in our body and assists in adapting to internal and external stimuli. Through this extensive network and the endocannabinoids produced, homeostasis is restored following cellular stressors.

The endocannabinoids (Anandamide and 2-AG) have similar properties as phyto-cannabinoids which are from the hemp plant. These phyto-cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), when they are administered, interact with the bodies own ECS. Products such as CBD have the potential to activate the ECS and assist in maintaining and restoring balance throughout our body. There are various studies of CBD and other cannabinoids evaluating their potential therapeutic effects pertaining to this interaction with the ECS.
